The benefits of yoga

In the beginning people are often attracted to yoga as an alternative form of exercise. It is different to other classes because the idea is not to become breathless, we work with the breath and relaxation is an integral part of the practise. Yoga gradually builds strength and flexibility, shaping and toning muscles and mobilising joints. Regular practise will release shoulder and neck tension and can reduce back pain. The breathing and relaxation exercises may help deal with stress and often improve the quality of sleep. Some people find they are better able to concentrate or that they develop a more positive attitude to life. Yoga works with the body and the mind, so you feel good from the inside out.

What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient Indian system for physical, mental and emotional improvement. The word yoga means ‘unity’ and is derived from the Sanskrit word yuj which means ‘to join’. On a practical level, this unity or joining can be thought of as a means of balancing and harmonising the body, mind and emotions. On a more subtle level, yoga seems to take us within ourselves, to a stillness or sense of peace. Yoga can, if we let it, begin to show us who we are.
